Leading EU figures
In an effort to make the EU more accountable with identified figures, the main EU institutions all have presidents or leading figures with defined powers.
- The President of the European Council is currently Donald Tusk, while
- The President of the European Commission is Jean-Claude Juncker.
- The European Parliament President, Martin Shulz, acts a little like the Westminster parliament’s Speaker.
- In foreign policy matters the EU is represented by the High Representative for Foreign and Security Affairs, Federica Mogherini.
Other important leaders include European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, who is responsible for euro inflation, and the most important judge, the President of the European Court of Justice.
The heads of state of key European countries like Germany, Britain, France and Italy are also important in leading the EU.
